This April, the American Amnion Association (AaA) proudly joins organizations across the nation in recognizing National Donate Life Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the life-changing impact of organ, eye, and tissue donation led by Donate Life America.
At the heart of this month-long campaign is a message of hope — hope that each of us can help save or improve lives through the simple yet profound act of becoming a donor.
While much attention is rightfully given to organ and blood donation, the AaA also seeks to shine a light on the critical role of living tissue donation — particularly the donation of birth tissues such as the amniotic membrane and umbilical cord. These tissues, generously donated by healthy, full-term moms, hold incredible potential in the fields of regenerative medicine, research, surgical use, wound care, ophthalmology and more.
“Living tissue donation is one of the most compassionate gifts a mother and her baby can give,” says Dan Hong, Executive Director of the American Amnion Association. “These donations are non-invasive, painless, and can dramatically improve the quality of life for patients suffering from chronic wounds, burns and degenerative eye conditions. During Donate Life Month, we want to ensure these powerful contributions are part of the national conversation.”
The AaA is committed to advancing ethical awareness, education, and access to birth tissue donation through partnerships with healthcare providers, OB/GYNs and tissue banks across the country. As a leading voice in the field, the AaA provides resources and training to clinicians and encourages expectant mothers to consider registering as donors when eligible.
